Handrail Requirements
- • Handrails required on both sides of stairs wider than 1,100mm
- • Handrail height: 865mm–965mm from stair nosing
- • Must be graspable (circular 30–43mm diameter or equivalent)
- • Must extend 300mm beyond top and bottom of stairway
Guard (Railing) Requirements
- • Guard required when drop exceeds 600mm (24 inches)
- • Minimum guard height: 900mm (residential stairs)
- • Maximum 100mm opening between pickets
- • Must resist minimum horizontal load at top rail
